The Leather Shoulder Bag: A Wardrobe Anchor

Black leather handmade crossbody bag with silver buckle detail.

Most people own several bags and reach for the same one. That bag is usually worn on the shoulder, holds what’s needed without being cavernous, and goes with nearly everything. It’s the anchor the rest of the collection sits around.

Why the shoulder carry wins

Carried on the shoulder, a bag is out of your hands and stable while you walk. You could get into it without taking it off, which matters more than it sounds when you’re paying for something or answering the phone.

It’s also the most forgiving way to carry weight. A handheld bag is tiring, a crossbody sits across the body permanently, and the shoulder sits between the two.

Strap length changes everything

The same bag wears completely differently depending on the drop:

  • Short, at the armpit. Neat and formal, and it keeps the bag’s shape on show
  • At the waist. The most flattering for most people, particularly with a curved shape like our Evie Half Moon
  • At the hip. Relaxed and easy, good for walking
  • Crossbody, where the strap is long enough or adjustable. See the everyday crossbody

If you’re buying one bag to do several jobs, an adjustable strap is worth more than an extra pocket.

What makes one last

Full grain leather. The surface of the hide is intact, so it ages into a patina rather than flaking. Our guide to full grain leather explains why it matters.

Solid hardware. Straps take all the load at the fixings. Our guide to leather bag hardware covers what to look for.

Stitching in the right places. Stress points need reinforcing, and a handmade bag shows this clearly.

A shape that holds up. Structured bags keep their form; softer bags slouch into a shape of their own. Both work, but they wear differently.

Our shoulder bags

Our saddle bags and the Evie Half Moon are all made to be worn on the shoulder, in small and medium sizes depending on what you carry. Each one is handmade in England, and the leather is chosen for how it ages.

If you’re weighing up sizes, our guide to choosing the right handbag size for your lifestyle is a good place to start.

Making it feel different

A shoulder bag you wear constantly could still feel new with very little effort. Tie a twilly to the strap fixing, or change the colour of what you wear it against. Our guide to how to style a silk scarf has more.

Looking after it

Leather wants using and occasional conditioning, not wrapping up. Our bag care page and our guide to storing your leather bags properly cover the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the most useful strap drop?

Around the waist suits most people and most outfits. An adjustable strap gives you more than one option from one bag.

Will a shoulder bag mark my clothing?

Good quality leather shouldn’t transfer colour once settled. Very pale clothing and brand new deeply dyed leather is the combination to be careful with at first.

Shoulder or crossbody?

Shoulder for everyday ease, crossbody for travelling and walking. A bag with a long or adjustable strap gives you both.
