There’s something deeply satisfying about seeing your initials pressed into leather. It transforms a beautiful bag into something uniquely yours — a small detail that says this was made for me.
We offer hand embossing on many of our bags, and it’s one of the most popular options for gifts. Here’s how it works and why the process matters.
What Is Leather Embossing?
Embossing uses heat and pressure to create an impression in the leather surface. A metal stamp — engraved with letters, numbers, or a design — is heated and pressed firmly into the leather, creating a permanent indentation.
The result is subtle and tactile. Run your fingers over an embossed initial and you can feel the lettering pressed into the grain. It catches the light differently from the surrounding leather, creating a mark that’s visible without being loud.
This is different from printing or painting, which sit on top of the leather and wear off over time. Embossing becomes part of the leather itself — it’s permanent and only becomes more characterful as the bag develops its natural patina.
How We Do It
We emboss by hand in our workshop using individual brass letter stamps. Each letter is positioned carefully, heated to the right temperature, and pressed with consistent pressure.
Temperature matters. Too cool and the impression is shallow and temporary. Too hot and the leather scorches. The sweet spot depends on the specific leather — its thickness, tannage, and moisture content. This is where experience matters. After years of embossing across different leathers and colours, we know instinctively how long to hold the press and how much pressure to apply.
Positioning is equally important. We mark alignment guides to ensure letters are straight, evenly spaced, and positioned where they look natural on the bag’s design. A beautifully embossed monogram in the wrong position looks wrong. Getting this right takes care and a steady hand.
Personalisation as a Gift
Embossed leather makes an exceptional gift. It shows thought beyond simply choosing a nice bag — it says you’ve had something made specifically for that person.
Popular options include single initials, two or three letter monograms, and short dates (wedding dates, birthdays, anniversaries). We keep it simple because simplicity is what makes it elegant.
If you’re ordering a bag as a gift and want embossing, let us know when you order and we’ll discuss positioning and font options. We always confirm with you before pressing — once it’s done, it’s permanent.
Which Bags Can Be Embossed?
Most of our bags are suitable for embossing, though the best results come from smooth, firm leather with enough thickness to hold a clean impression. Our full range includes options suitable for personalisation — if you’re unsure, just ask and we’ll advise.
Embossing is available on most made-to-order items. Turnaround is typically a few extra days on top of standard making time.
