What they tend not to own is something made properly by hand, in this country, by someone whose name is on it. That’s a different sort of present, and it’s the sort that gets remembered rather than absorbed into a wardrobe.
Here’s a guide to giving one, at a few different budgets, with a note on timing at the end that’s worth reading before you plan anything.
If you want to give something genuinely lovely without spending several hundred pounds, this is the place to start.

A mass-produced bag is a nice object. A handmade one carries something else with it.
Every piece is cut, stitched and finished by hand from full grain vegetable tanned leather, plant-dyed and entirely biodegradable, with custom-cast brass hardware and a soft suede lining. Made in England from beginning to end, with nothing outsourced.
That means the person opening it isn’t just receiving a bag. They’re receiving something that will look better in five years than it does on Christmas morning, as the leather softens where it folds and the brass warms with handling. Very few gifts improve with age. This is one of them.
