How Leather Ages: A Guide to Beautiful Patina

Elegant handmade leather crossbody bag with adjustable strap and brass hardware.

One of the quiet joys of owning something made from good leather is that it doesn’t just last — it gets better. Where most things fade and wear out, fine leather wears in, developing a depth of character that’s impossible to fake. That character has a name: patina. Here’s how it happens, and how to help it along.

What patina actually is

Patina is the soft sheen and richer, deeper colour that natural leather develops over time. It comes from everyday life — the oils from your hands, sunlight, the gentle marks and burnishing of use. Full-grain and vegetable-tanned leathers, the finest kinds, develop the most beautiful patina because their natural surface is left to breathe and respond to the world rather than being coated over.

Two identical bags, carried by two different people, will age differently — picking up the marks of their owners’ lives. That’s the appeal: your bag becomes uniquely yours.

Why it gets more beautiful, not worse

It helps to reframe how we think about marks. A faint scuff, a slight darkening at the handles, a softening of the leather — on cheaper materials these would look like damage. On good leather, they read as character. The colour deepens, the surface develops a warm glow, and the leather grows softer and more supple with handling. Many people find their leather is at its most beautiful years after they bought it.

How to help your leather age well

  • Use it. Patina comes from life, so don’t save your bag for best — the more it’s part of your days, the richer it becomes.
  • Condition it occasionally. A little leather conditioner now and then keeps the leather nourished and supple and helps it age gracefully rather than drying out.
  • Keep it out of extremes. Avoid prolonged soaking and harsh heat. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally, away from direct heat.
  • Store it kindly. When it’s resting, keep it somewhere cool and dry, ideally loosely stuffed to hold its shape, in a breathable dust bag.
  • Embrace the marks. Resist the urge to fuss over every small mark — they’re part of the story.

We make our leather goods to be used and to age beautifully, the way good leather should — companions that grow lovelier with every year. Browse the collection and choose a piece that’ll only get better with time.
